LeRone’s Los Angeles Clippers Experience of a Lifetime

At age 14, LeRone was diagnosed with stage IV Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. He immediately began chemotherapy and radiation treatments. After a couple of months, he was declared to be in remission, but 6 months later the cancer returned.

New scans prompted LeRone’s doctors to start him on stem cell treatments. They removed LeRone’s bone marrow, treated it with chemotherapy, and then transplanted it back into his body. Due to his weakened immune system, he stayed in the hospital for the following six months. Declared in remission again, LeRone was released from the hospital. However, at his next 6 month follow up appointment, the scans showed that the cancer was back a second time.

This time LeRone’s doctors used donor stem cells for his stem cell treatment. During this 6 month hospital stay, LeRone was put in a medically induced coma because he had contracted Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) from the donor stem cells treatment. GVHD develops when the donor’s immune cells mistakenly attack the patient’s normal cells. It can be life threatening if its effects are not controlled. LeRone’s body was shutting down. Only 40% of his heart was working and 20% of his lungs. LeRone was in a coma for 2 weeks while doctors treated him. He continues to have health complications from the GVHD.

LeRone’s favorite hobbies include playing video games, reading, and watching sports. He enjoys cheering on the Los Angeles Clippers. For his wish of a lifetime, Star Wishes for Children granted LeRone a VIP LA Clippers experience. He was privy to the best seats in the house at the Staples Center for a game he will never forget. The LA Clippers took on the Denver Nuggets, and LeRone was there to see it all firsthand. He got to see the Clippers beat the Nuggets with a final score of 105-90, securing their place as the fourth Western Conference team to clinch a playoff spot. LeRone joined the crowd in a wild uproar of applause for the home team’s victory. As if seeing his favorite basketball team win a monumental game wasn’t enough, LeRone spent another fun-filled day riding the roller coasters at Universal Studios Hollywood. During his wish trip, LeRone luxuriated in the deluxe comforts of the sophisticated JW Marriott at LA Live. He also enjoyed dinner at the legendary Saddle Ranch Chop House.
